It’s been a tough year for Arizona State’s baseball team, which isn’t likely to make the NCAA tournament and is facing the prospect of a second consecutive losing record. But the future is bright for the Sun Devils and the present isn’t too bad either thanks to freshman Spencer Torkelson.
The infielder/outfielder leads the NCAA in home runs with 20, the latest coming Sunday in a 13-8 home win over Utah to give ASU a weekend sweep of the Utes.

Torkelson, who went 3 for 3 on Sunday to improve his batting average to .326, only hit 11 homers in four high school seasons in California. He is on pace to be the first freshman to lead Division I in homers.
Sunday’s win improved ASU’s overall record to 17-22 with a 9-9 mark in Pac-12 play.
