Former Arizona State track and field athletes Shelby Houlihan and Maggie Ewen left Des Moines, Iowa, with championship hardware from the USATF Championships this weekend.
Houlihan, the former Sun Devils distance runner, won the 1,500 meters on Saturday and then followed that performance by winning the 5,000 meters a day later. She won the 1,500 meters in 4:05.48 and crossed the line in the 5,000 meters at 15:31.03.
The distance runner achieved rare air by winning the double. She became just the second women to win the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at a national championship meet.
Fresh off of winning the shot put and discus titles at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, Ewen achieved gold again in the shot put at the USATF Championships. Ewen won the women’s shot put with a throw of 63-3.50. She also picked up a silver in the discus with a heave of 200-6.
