Just when it appeared the Chicago Bulls drafted the second coming of Dirk Nowitzki, Lauri Markkanen struggled in the NBA Summer League Monday against the Atlanta Hawks in a 75-55 loss.
Markkanen, the No. 7 overall pick in the NBA draft in June, shot 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) from the field in 31 minutes. Markkanen’s worst game in his one season at Arizona came in February against California, when he shot 20 percent.
It wasn’t just his overall shooting performance that disappointed, but also his three-point shot. One part of Markkanen’s game that made him a unique prospect heading into the draft was he’s a 7-footer who shot 42.3 percent from beyond the arc as a freshman at Arizona.
Against the Hawks, Markkanen shot 0-for-10 from three-point range.
Markkanen finished with 8 points and 4 blocks. The Bulls will meet the Washington Wizards Tuesday at 3 p.m. PT on ESPN3.
