The release of Phil Steele’s annual preseason magazine is the surest sign that football season is approaching.
Steele’s release date pops up later this month. Some of his content already is trickling out for its release.

One of the most intriguing parts of Steele’s annual magazine are the teams he predicts as his “surprise teams” for the upcoming season.
The Big 12 is well-represented. Texas ranks No. 2 and TCU comes in at No. 10.
Steele does not release the context of his rankings. But these teams are typically those he expects to jump out of the shadows to contend for a national championship.
Can Texas, TCU really contend for Big 12 title and beyond?
Both Texas and TCU are fashionable contenders to challenge favored Oklahoma for the Big 12 title in 2018.
The Longhorns are weighing options to settle their quarterback situation. Texas coach Tom Herman hasn’t decided between Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger.
And Gary Patterson hasn’t settled on his quarterback among contenders Shawn Robinson, Grayson Muehlstein, Karson Ringdahl and Penn transfer Michael Collins as his starter.
Settling that question for both programs assuredly will determine whether they approach Steele’s early promise.
