We’re still three weeks away from football, which means all we have right now are pointless comparisons between Big 12 teams until things are settled on the field.
Reddit user u/nbingham196 mapped the closest school from every FBS conference to every county in the United States — including Alaska and Hawaii — and the Big 12’s results may surprise you.

Two conference cellar-dwellers, Texas Tech and Iowa State, appear to occupy the biggest parts of the country with the Red Raiders taking most of the southwest and west coast and the Cyclones winning Alaska. Of course, if we’re going by number of counties, the clear winner is West Virginia, which occupies the entire east coast.
Perhaps even more surprising is OU’s holding, which amounts to just 50 counties spread mostly over southern half of Oklahoma, northern Texas and central Arkansas. Despite that, the reigning league champion Sooners consistently pull in some of the Big 12’s strongest recruiting classes and sport one of the country’s largest fan bases.
The Big 12’s other elite program, Texas, finds itself in a similar situation as the Sooners. The ‘Horns are limited to just the southern portion of the state, which includes Austin, San Antonio and Houston, while TCU occupies the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Hurry up, football season.
