The season hasn’t even started yet and already the pundits are downgrading the Big 12 compared with the rest of the nation.
CBS Sports.com senior writer Jerry Palm picked the Big 12 to be shut out of the College Football Playoffs for a second straight season. Instead, Palm picks Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and USC to make playoff trips this season.
Six Big 12 teams are selected in Palm’s preseason predictions.
Big 12 bowl teams, according to CBSSports.com:
- Cotton – Oklahoma State vs. LSU
- Alamo – Oklahoma vs. Stanford
- Liberty – Kansas State vs. Arkansas
- Camping World – Texas vs. Louisville
- Texas – TCU vs. Texas A&M
- Cactus – West Virginia vs. Washington State
If Palm’s predictions are accurate, the conference’s balance appears to be rewarded.
Two of the most interesting games appear at the bottom. Gary Patterson and TCU will square off for the first time since meeting in the old GallleryFurniture.com Bowl in Houston in 2001.
And the West Virginia-Washington State game would be intriguing as well. It would give West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen a chance to hook up with coaching mentor Mike Leach. The two have never met as head coaches. Holgorsen was on Leach’s staff at Texas Tech as an offensive coach from 2000-07.
