Texas men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart is reportedly purusing an Iowa State basketball assistant to fill a vacancy on the Longhorns’ coaching staff.
Per Chip Brown of 247Sports, Smart is looking to hire Cyclones assistant Neill Berry as a replacement for former Texas assistant Mike Morrell. Morrell left the Longhorns in April to take the head coaching job at North Carolina-Asheville.
Berry has made previous stops at Western Kentucky, South Carolina and High Point University as an assistant before landing in Ames, Iowa in time for the 2015-16 season. He played college basketball under current Iowa State coach Steve Prohm while at Southeastern Louisiana.
Iowa State made the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and won the Big 12 Championship Tournament in 2017 before the Cyclones were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament later that season.
Texas is coming off a 2017-18 campaign that saw the Longhorns qualify for the NCAA Tournament, but suffer a first-round over time loss to Nevada. Smart and the Longhorns went an overall 19-15.
