A solid 2018 recruiting class has California in position to bounce back from last year’s horrible last-place finish in the Pac-12. And now its first commitment for 2019 has the Golden Bears poised for an even bigger leap.
The Bears have earned a pledge from 4-star shooting guard Charles Smith IV, according to his Twitter account.

Ranked No. 73 overall in 2019, per 247Sports, as well as the seventh-best shooting guard and the No. 4 prospect from Texas, the 6-foot-5 Smith is from Houston but plays for McEachern High School in Georgia. He picked Cal over offers from Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, among others.
Smith’s commitment boosts Cal to No. 12 in the 2019 recruiting rankings, second in the Pac-12 behind UCLA.
