So when it comes to the season opener between Alabama and Florida State — his alma mater and his conference — the coach is sticking with his ACC cohorts.

While Swinney is pulling for his conference in the matchup, there is a sense to which that is pulling for Clemson. A Florida State win sets up a marquee matchup later in the season for Clemson when it faces Florida State, giving the Tigers a chance for a playoff resume boost — if it needs one.
