All eyes are on the uber-talented Clemson defensive line, especially when it comes to the 2019 NFL Draft. The trio of Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins are all viewed as first-round picks, according to “way-too-early” mock drafts.
Those who have spent time evaluating them are willing to go even further. NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread talked with college coaches and NFL scouts to compile a list of 18 defensive prospects who will be future NFL stars. Ferrell, Lawrence and Wilkins all made the cut.
Ferrell is the pass rusher of the bunch, and has shown a knack for making tackles in the backfield during his career. The redshirt junior has recorded 110 total tackles, 30.5 for loss, 15.5 sacks and two forced fumbles over the past two seasons.
Lawrence and Wilkins have proven to be dynamic playmakers from the defensive tackle position. Lawrence has tallied 95 tackles, 11 for loss, and 8.5 sacks in his first two years at Clemson.
Wilkins could have left for the draft after last season, but decided to chase another national championship with the Tigers. His return provides a boost for an already talented defensive line. Over the course of his three-year career, the senior has logged 141 total tackles, 26.5 for loss, and 10.5 sacks.
It is likely that all three will be given the opportunity to prove these college coaches and NFL scouts right when they get to the pro ranks. However, right now their focus is on combining their talents to lead a dominant defense with championship aspirations.
