Clemson-The Citadel preview, keys to the game
In what should be a tuneup before it faces South Carolina on the road in its annual rivalry game, Clemson hosts The Citadel on Saturday.
Clemson already knows that it will have at least two remaining games on its schedule after the end of the regular season. With its win over Florida State on Saturday, it clinched the ACC Atlantic Division and will face No. 2 Miami in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte, N.C. on December 2. That could stand as a possible College Football Playoff elimination game if both teams win out. The Hurricanes still have games against Virginia and Pitt coming up before meeting the Tigers in Charlotte.
While the Tigers will face more of a significant challenge from South Carolina next Saturday than they will against the Bulldogs, the coaching staff has almost assuredly kept the team focused solely on this game. Although this game should easily fall to Clemson, The Citadel does come in with strong statistics in several key categories. The Bulldogs average 308.6 rushing yards per game and have allowed just 139.1 to their opponents. They average just over 98 yards passing, but that is due to their triple-option offense, as is their high rushing total.
For the second time this year, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables will be preparing his team for the triple-option look. Fortunately for the Tigers, they handled it well in their first exposure to it this year against Georgia Tech. Yellow Jackets quarterback Taquon Marshall was held to just 23 yards rushing on 15 attempts despite scoring a touchdown, his stats in that one a steep departure from his 103.7 yard-per-game rushing average.
Jordan Black and Dominique Allen have split time at quarterback for the Bulldogs this season. In nine games, Black has thrown for 523 yards, 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions on 22-of-46 passing. Allen has played in ten games, going 29-of-82 for 458 yards and 3 touchdowns against 6 interceptions. He is also the team’s leading rusher, recording 8 touchdowns and 571 yards on 124 carries, an average of 4.6 yards per attempt. Grant Drakeford is behind him on the rushing charts, adding 556 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 56 carries.
