Georgia commitment Nolan Smith was already considered one of the best prospects in the Class of 2019 prior to testing off the charts this weekend at The Opening regional in Atlanta, and despite the fact that he’s a Bulldogs verbal there’s new reason for Clemson fans to be excited.
The 5-star recruit that the 247Sports composite rankings lists as the fifth-best player in the nation and even though he’s committed to Georgia because he wants to play in a certain style of defense, he can’t get Clemson off his mind.
“It’s certain things about Georgia and just the defense that they run,” Smith told Hannah Rogerson of TigerNet.com on Sunday. “I feel like I’m a 3-4 outside linebacker but I’m playing in the 4-3 system right now and I’m working, I’m working just fine. And they are still in it, but it’s kind of hard because I really want to play in the 3-4 defenses, but I just can’t, it’s just some reason that I just can’t stop thinking about Clemson.”
The 6-foot-3, 232-pound edge rusher recently clocked an impressive 4.51-second 40-yard dash and a 40.6-inch vertical jump while testing for The Opening in Atlanta. That will almost certainly earn him another invitation to The Opening’s national competition in Oregon.
Smith has been committed to Georgia since Jan. 29 of last year. So Clemson will have a lot of history with the Bulldogs staff to work past, but it sounds like they’ve got a very realistic chance of flipping one of the most dynamic players in the Class of 2019.
