Hunter Renfrow and Clemson take on Miami in the 2017 ACC Championship Game on Saturday evening. Kickoff is set for after 8pm ET on ABC.
Here are five things to know about the junior wide receiver:
1. Hunter Renfrow walked on to the Clemson football team after only receiving four offers out of high school.
To say Renfrow was lightly recruited is an understatement.
Out of his four offers, only one was from an FBS school (Appalachian State). After visits to both Appalachian State and Clemson, he made the decision to enroll at Clemson, walking on in August 2015 and eventually earning a scholarship.
2. Hunter Renfrow played several positions in high school, both on offense and defense.
Renfrow was a multi-tool player for Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Socastee High School – where he played quarterback, cornerback and free safety – but didn’t see much time at wide receiver. In fact, he was being recruited as a quarterback and athlete out of high school before converting to wideout after arriving at Clemson.
3. Hunter Renfrow’s father was his high school coach.
At Socastee, Renfrow played under his father, Tim. The elder Renfrow coached the football team from 2003-2012 before stepping down to become the school’s athletic director.
Tim Renfrow coached Socastee to a historic season in 2012, leading it to its first ever regional title and two wins shy from an appearance in the Class AAA state finals.
4. Hunter Renfrow made the winning touchdown catch in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game against Alabama.
Renfrow saw himself become a campus hero overnight after his game-winning catch during last season’s national championship game.
With 6 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter and Clemson at the Alabama 2-yard line trailing 31-28, Deshaun Watson rolled to his right and found an open Renfrow, who hauled it in to put his team ahead with just a second remaining. The Tigers would avenge their loss to Alabama in the previous year’s title game and win the school’s second football championship.
5. Hunter Renfrow is Clemson’s second-leading receiver.
Renfrow is second on the Tigers roster with 526 receiving yards, 54 yards behind Deon Cain. However, Renfrow does have one more catch than Cain, with his 60 receptions leading the team. He has also found the end zone 3 times.
