John Calipari is widely known for his “one-and-done” strategy, but the all-time wins leader in men’s basketball has apparently taken kindly to it too. As a result, Duke will have some top-notch freshman once again on its roster.
In fact, College Basketball Insider Jon Rothstein loves the incoming group for the Blue Devils so much, he included three of them on his list of top 15 impact ACC freshmen.
The three incoming freshman Rothstein included on his list were Trevon Duval, Wendell Carter and Gary Trent Jr., all of whom were rated 5-star prospects at 247Sports.
Actually, had Rothstein done a list of top 15 impact freshmen for the entire country, there’s a chance Duval, Carter and Trent Jr. all would have made that as well. The 247Sports composite rankings had all three players ranked in the top 16 nationally in the 2017 recruiting class.
A big class is just what the Blue Devils needed to get back into national contention this winter. Three of Duke’s top four scorers – Luke Kennard, Jayson Tatum and Frank Jackson – all left as did Harry Giles. All four players are now on NBA rosters.
But with three 5-star freshmen and Grayson Allen back, Rothstein ranked Duke second on his ACC offseason power rankings behind only Louisville.
