Duke’s No. 1 class for 2018 just got stronger. The Blue Devils and small forward Joey Baker announced Wednesday he will reclassify from the 2019 class to 2018 according to 247Sports.
“I talked to the coaches about it, and we figured it was the best decision for my basketball game and off the court growth as well, like in the classroom and socially,” said Baker, according to 247Sports. “I feel like it will challenge me in all of those aspects and allow me to grow a lot faster than I would.
“Me and coach [Jon] Scheyer have a really good relationship and we talk a good amount, we just felt like to take my game to the next level this would be the best way to do that. I felt like it was the best choice.”
In the 2019 class, Baker was the No. 27 overall prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was also ranked the No. 3 prospect from North Carolina and No. 7 small forward.
Duke already had the No. 1 recruiting class with four 5-star commitments in the 2018 class. So, the addition of Baker makes it historically good, giving Duke five 5-star prospects who will be freshmen.
Kentucky is the only other school that even landed three 5-star prospects in 2018.
