The Duke Blue Devils are ending the 2017-18 season at No. 4 in the final coaches poll, which was released Tuesday, one day after Villanova beat Michigan to win its second national championship in three years.
Duke didn’t receive a chance to face the eventual national champions in the NCAA Tournament but nearly did. The Blue Devils lost in overtime to Kansas during the Elite Eight, 85-81. Point guard Grayson Allen could have won the game for Duke at the end of regulation, but his shot at the buzzer rimmed out of the basket.
Despite the failed opportunity to earn a record 13th Final Four appearance under Mike Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils still experienced a great season. They finished 29-8 overall, including 13-5 in the ACC during the regular season. Duke also won an ACC Tournament game, beating Notre Dame, 88-70, in the quarterfinals before falling to rival North Carolina in the semifinals.
The team will be different next season, but Duke should receive a great chance to earn that 13th Final Four bid for Coach K in 2019. The Blue Devils once again have the top-rated incoming recruiting class according to 247Sports with 4 5-star freshman arriving in Durham.
