After suffering its second loss of the season at N.C. State on Saturday, No. 7 Duke had no trouble at Pitt on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils took their frustrations out on the Panthers in the form of a 87-52 win.
Duke was 53.1% from the floor versus Pitt’s 33.3% mark and sank 12 three pointers while holding the Panthers to just 4-22 from beyond the arc. It also committed just 6 turnovers on the evening. Six players hit double digits for the Blue Devils, led by Marvin Bagley III’s 16 points on 7-16 shooting, with the freshman tacking on a game-high 15 rebounds for a double-double.
The Blue Devils avoided an injury scare as Wendell Carter Jr. went down with an apparent ankle injury early in the first half. After going to the locker room, he would return, ending the night with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Here’s what coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the game:
On the team’s overall performance: “We played really hard tonight, well on defense and shared the ball well. We had 6 kids in double figures. I thought our bench did a really good job. We have a couple of kids out, and when Wendell went out early, our bench came through for us.”
On Duke holding Pitt to just 52 points: “We’ve been practicing like crazy trying to get better (on defense) and we were better tonight. We just have to keep working it it. They’re young kids; we’re not deep. They just have to keep learning these new habits and today was a step forward.”
Expanding on the fact that he has a young team and how they’re still developing: “We should just be patient. When I was younger, I’d be more anxious, frustrated, or whatever. I have a little bit more patient now…The main thing is the development of habits. The expectations on these kids are so great, and they’re not ready for that yet…We will have adversity, we will have losses, we will have injuries, and hopefully come March we will qualify for the (NCAA) tournament and be older- together.”
