Three of Duke’s freshmen starters – Marvin Bagley III, Gary Trent, Jr. and Trevon Duval – have already declared for the NBA Draft. But we still haven’t heard anything from Wendell Carter.
That’s because there’s still a real chance he returns to Duke, according to his mother, Kylia.
“He is having a tug with a heart and his mind,” Carter told The Undefeated. “I don’t feel for him because I think it’s good for him that he is going through this struggle. It’s his decision. He has to live with it.”
Carter’s eventual NBA leap has always seemed like a no-brainer, especially because of comments Kylia made last month:
“If you look at the pros and the cons, college basketball is a big con,” she said. “From a business perspective, college is 100 percent risk and it’s 100 percent negative to your business objective. It’s not putting you in any better position for achieving your business objective, which is reaching the NBA.”
It would still be surprising if Carter returned for his sophomore season, but it’s also a bit puzzling that he hasn’t declared yet. It’s certainly a situation worth monitoring.
