Florida State recruiting: DB target has Seminoles in top 5

4-star S Trikweze Bridges among top safety targets for Florida State

Florida State’s 2019 recruiting class already features three talented defensive back commits, but the Seminoles seek even more help in the secondary.

Specifically, coach Willie Taggart and defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett — who doubles as the Seminoles defensive backs coach — are looking for defenders to play safety.

While the Seminoles will continue to recruit players who can line up at multiple positions in the secondary, finding prospects that project as true safeties is likely a remaining 2019 priority.

One target the Seminoles have their eyes on is 4-star Lanett (Ala.) safety Trikweze Bridges.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Yellowhammer State defender rates as the nation’s No. 27 safety and the No. 341 player overall in the 2019 cycle, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Heading into the summer, Bridges carries more than 20 offers. However, on Tuesday, he cut his list of suitors down to five schools.

Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and Penn State are the schools remaining in his focus.

Of his group of finalists, the Seminoles are the only school that has hosted him on campus. In fact, Bridges has made two unofficial visits to Florida State this spring — the last of which came for the Seminoles spring game in April.

It’s likely that the other schools on his list get him on campus before he makes a final decision. However, it also appears the Seminoles are in good shape if they continue to recruit him hard.

2020 5-star offensive lineman enjoys visit to Florida State

It’s no secret that Florida State has a major need at tackle, for the 2019 cycle and likely beyond.

Taggart and offensive line coach Greg Frey already have begun scouting top options among prep underclassmen.

One player who fits that criteria is 5-star Cincinnati St. Xavier tackle Paris Johnson Jr.

The 6-7, 275-pound Johnson rates as the nation’s top tackle and the No. 7 player overall in the 2020 cycle, per 247Sports.

Last Saturday, Johnson began a string visits, starting with one to Alabama.

After seeing the defending national champions, Johnson saw Auburn the next day.

On Monday, Johnson made his way to Tallahassee for the first time to check out the Seminoles.

Johnson came away impressed with Taggart and the new Seminoles staff, according to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.

“Coach Taggart is a great person, Coach Frey is a great person,” Johnson told Wiltfong. “The strength and conditioning staff is amazing. You can tell the players love it there and their whole energy has changed and I feel like they have the opportunity to bring Florida State back to where they were in the 90s. It’s going to be interesting for me to watch. I feel like they have the right staff.”

Johnson, who has more than 40 offers, will continue his string of visits by seeing Clemson and Georgia later this week and then heading out to the West Coast later this month to see Pac-12 stalwarts California, Stanford, UCLA and USC.

The Seminoles are hoping this visit made enough of an impression to get him back on campus in the future.
