ACC Media Days kicked off Thursday, and many of the conference’s coaches were not bashful about sharing their thoughts on where the ACC stands in college football.
First, it was Boston College’s Steve Addazio saying it was “not even debatable” that the ACC is the best football conference in the country. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher followed suit, firing another shot at the SEC and Big Ten.
“I think we’ve established ourselves as the premier conference in college football,” Fisher said Thursday.
“We’ve had two teams win [national championships] in the last four years, and [the Clemson Tigers] also were the runner-up.”
Fisher pointed out that two of the last four Heisman Trophy winners came from the ACC. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Lamar Jackson, is back for his junior season with Louisville.
Furthermore, the ACC went 9-3 in bowl games last season. The conference also was 10-4, including 4-1 in bowl games, against the SEC.
Clemson and Florida State also knocked off two of the top three teams from the Big Ten — Ohio State and Michigan — in the Fiesta and Orange bowls, respectively.
The Seminoles will have a chance to back up their coach’s claims that the ACC is the best conference in college football in Week 1 when they face Alabama at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
