Iowa State plays Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 7, as Big 12 teams get into the thick of their conference schedule. Find the score and live updates below.
The Cyclones (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) after a narrow 17-7 loss at home to Texas in a Thursday night game Sept. 28. Iowa State has shown flashes of potential, but this will easily be its most difficult test so far this season. A win would not only be their first conference win of the year, but the biggest victory in years for the program.
The Sooners (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) come into this game off a bye week. The last time they were on the field, they beat Baylor 49-41 on the road in Week 4. Oklahoma is the Big 12 favorite and is currently ranked No. 3 in the country. But the Sooners must be careful not to overlook the Cyclones, even if they do have the Red River Rivalry against Texas coming up next week.

Iowa State-Oklahoma: Keys to the game
1. Give the ball to David Montgomery.
He’s the best running back in the Big 12 who no one is talking about. The sophomore is averaging 5.5 yards per carry with 356 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns already this season. Montgomery inexplicably carried the ball just nine times against Texas last week. That has to change if the Cyclones want to have a chance against the Sooners. Oklahoma is extremely thin at linebacker too, so there may be more opportunities to run the ball between the tackles.
2. Win the turnover battle.
Iowa State quarterback Jacob Park threw three interceptions against Texas. If not for those mistakes, the Cyclones could have pulled off the upset against the Longhorns. Oklahoma is a much tougher opponent, and this game is on the road. That means it’s even more important for Iowa State to take care of the football on offense. And if they can create turnovers on defense by forcing Baker Mayfield into some errant throws that lead to interceptions, even better.
3. Get off the field on third down.
The Longhorns have one of the worst offenses in the Big 12, and yet they still managed to convert 11 of 23 third downs against Iowa State. Iowa State can’t let that trend continue against Oklahoma, which boasts one of the best offenses in the country. The formula for victory for Iowa State is to force a couple of three-and-outs and then put together some sustained drives by handing the ball off to Montgomery. The more time Mayfield and the Sooners’ offense spend on the sideline, the better things will go for the Cyclones.
