“The refs clearly had it out for us and it cost us the game,” says some fan of every team that loses in the NCAA Tournament, or even the regular season for that matter.
Well, that isn’t an exact quote, but somewhere, someone is surely blaming the referees for costing their team a shot at a national title, because, well, if the refs knew how to do their job, their team would be cutting the nets, right?
This isn’t selective to one program, or even one group of programs.
If your team, whichever team it may be, loses, odds are the refs are to blame. The majority of people will take to message boards, social media or their local sports bar to voice such complaints.
Others create actual attire.
On Sunday, Kansas topped Duke in the Elite Eight in overtime, 85-81. Of course, there was a controversial call with 2:49 remaining in overtime, in which Duke forward Wendell Carter appeared to be in position to draw a charge, but the refs instead whistled him for a blocking foul, which sent him to the bench with his fifth. After Malik Newman split the free throws, the game was tied at 76, but of course, the Jayhawks outscored the Blue Devils 9-to-5 from that point to win the game.
But, it’s worth bearing in mind that “Duke was robbed,” at least according to T-shirts that are now on sale on etsy.com for Bob’s T-Shirt Store.

The shirts can be purchased for $14 and sizes range from small to 3XL, although the price increases to $16 for extra larges.
As far as the refereeing in that game was concerned, Duke was whistled for 16 fouls, while Kansas was charged with 14 fouls. However, save for the final 18 seconds of the game, in which Duke committed two fouls while trying to stay in the game, the foul discrepancy was even.
But of course, one foul can change a game, as as evident by the shirts for sale, Duke fans believe they were robbed.
