It’s been quite a Tuesday night for Utah Jazz rookie guard Donovan Mitchell.
The evening began with him walking into Vivint Smart Home Arena with a hoodie that clearly was meant to troll fellow first-year player Ben Simmons. It continued with the Jazz handing Draymond Green, Kevin Durant and the Stephen Curry-less Warriors a convincing loss.
Mitchell, for his part, put together a terrific statline – 22 points and a 4-for-5 mark from 3-point range through three quarters. During the third quarter, the former Louisville standout made a little history:
Per @utahjazz PR: That last 3-pointer by Donovan Mitchell gives him the most 3s in a season by any rookie (186). Damian Lillard had 185 as a rookie.

A little context: that record by Lillard was set at during the 2012-2013 season. That was the same season that ended with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft win NBA Rookie of the Year honors. All Lillard’s done in his seven-year career is make three All-Star teams.
It will be interesting to see who ends up winning the Rookie of the Year award this time around. From the looks of it, it appears to be a two-man race between Mitchell and Simmons.
But Mitchell has built a strong case for himself. Whether or not he wins it shouldn’t put a damper on what could turn out to be a long and successful NBA career.
