The Miami Hurricanes announced Thursday that junior defensive back Ryan Mayes will leave the football program. He plans to transfer according to 247Sports.
Mayes mostly played special teams in college, recording 3 tackles in 2016. He was rated a 3-star defensive back out of Miami Northwestern High School in the 2014 recruiting class.
The Hurricanes are pretty stacked at cornerback, where Mayes would mostly practice on defense with Miami. The Hurricanes already have junior Michael Jackson, sophomore Malek Young and freshman Trajan Bandy, and then they landed graduate transfer Dee Delaney and JUCO signee Jhavonte Dean.
It didn’t look like the path to playing more on defense was going to get any easier next season for Mayes either. Miami has emphasized recruiting cornerbacks for 2018 and they already have three commitments from that position, all three of which are 4-star players according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
The 2018 recruiting class for Miami is ranked second behind only Ohio State. The top rated player the Hurricanes have in the class is running back Lorenzo Lingard, who is a 5-star prospect, but of the 12 4-star recruits Miami already has locked in for the 2018 recruiting class, four of them are defensive backs.
