Miami’s spring game is fast approaching and the Hurricanes are bringing in another nice group of prospects for the occasion. It won’t be as big a Miami recruiting weekend as the Hurricanes’ junior and underclassman days, but there should be a slew of commits and top targets at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
The major reason for the relatively thin list are official visit dates at Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan. Also, others are attending the Florida State and Florida spring games. The two other Florida schools are making their scrimmage into bigger events after hosting junior days in February. The Hurricanes just held their junior day March 24.
The expected visitor list is shifting and many of these planned visits are contingent on arranging transportation. As such, this list will be updated. For now, here are some of the most important players who plan to watch the Hurricanes’ spring game (*—commit) (^—no offer):
WR Jeremiah Payton, 4 stars, Duncan U. Fletcher (Neptune Beach, Fla.)*
RB Marcus Crowley, 3 stars, Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville)*
DT Denzel Daxon, 3 stars, Doral (Fla.) Academy Prep*
TE Larry Hodges, 3 stars, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.)*
OLB Jahmar Brown, 3 stars, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
Jahmar Brown will be in attendance Saturday as long as he can sort out transportation. If he gets there, he will probably be the most pressing uncommitted target in attendance. The rising senior watched a fellow linebacker from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., verbally commit to Miami earlier this month. It’s not a stretch to think the 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect could join Anthony Solomon in the near future, especially after visiting for junior day in March.
OLB Samuel Brooks, 3 stars, Miami Northwestern Senior*
ATH Cornelius Nunn, 3 stars, Miami Palmetto (Pinecrest, Fla.)
The last time Cornelius Nunn visited Miami, he left junior day with an offer from the Hurricanes. The rising senior has some big names ahead of him on Miami’s board, but the Hurricanes are making him feel wanted.
OLB Darius Williams, 3 stars, Miami Norland Senior (Miami Gardens, Fla.)
OLB Zac Smith, 2 stars, Sarasota (Fla.)*
Zac Smith committed to Miami as a preferred walk-on back in October while attending a game at Hard Rock Stadium. Saturday will mark his first visit since pledging to the Hurricanes. The rising senior is considered a 2-star outside linebacker by 247Sports.com, but is Miami’s fullback in the Class of 2019. He also played defensive end for Braden River High School in Bradenton, Fla., in the fall.
ATH Willie Gaines, unranked, Cocoa (Fla.)^
RB Don Chaney Jr., 5 stars, Belen Jesuit Prep (Miami) (2020)
TE Dominic Mammarelli, 4 stars, Naples (Fla.) (2020)*
CB Henry Gray, 4 stars, Miami Central (2020)*
ATH Avantae Williams, 4 stars, DeLand (Fla.) (2020)*
Avantae Williams recently received an invitation to the 2020 Under Armour All-America Game, and the longest tenured member of the Hurricanes’ Class of 2020 is working to get to the Miami for the first time in 2018 this weekend. The 4-star athlete, who spent the fall as a strong safety for Bradenton’s IMG Academy, couldn’t get to the Hurricanes’ underclassman day March 31. Now at DeLand (Fla.) High School, the rising junior remains firm in his commitment. He’s also a cousin of early enrolled running back Lorenzo Lingard.
DE Samuel Anaele, 4 stars, Doral Academy Prep (2020)*
T Marcus Dumervil, 4 stars, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) (2020)
DT Willie Moise, 4 stars, Chaminade-Madonna College Prep (2020)*
DE Tre’von Riggins, 3 stars, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) (2020)*
Like Williams, Tre’von Riggins also recently landed an invitation to the Under Armour Game. They are former teammates at IMG and should both be in the Miami area Saturday. The 3-star strongside defensive also missed the Hurricanes’ underclassman day in March and has yet to visit in 2018. He hasn’t visited anywhere else, though. The defensive lineman even skipped a trip to Florida with some of his Ascenders teammates last weekend.
WR Marcus Fleming, 3 stars, Miami Southridge (2020)^
G Jonathan Denis, 3 stars, South Dade (Homestead, Fla.) (2020)
OLB Andy Garcia, 3 stars, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) (2020)^
ATH Caziah Holmes, unranked, Cocoa (Fla.) (2020)
Caziah Holmes is probably the prospect most firmly on commitment watch this weekend. The unranked athlete visited Coral Gables, Fla., for the Hurricanes’ underclassman day and told Matt Shodell of Rivals.com that Miami is his favorite after the trip. The 6-1, 180-pound rising junior projects as a defensive back for the Hurricanes, although he also plays quarterback for Cocoa (Fla.) High School.
DE Elijah Roberts, unranked, Christopher Columbus (Miami) (2020)
RB Frank Gore Jr., unranked, Coral Gables (Fla.) Senior (2020)^
OLB Ruben Hyppolite II, unranked, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) (2020)^
CB Jaheem Joseph, Monsignor Edward Pace (Miami Gardens, Fla.) (2020)^
G Laurence Seymore, unranked, Miami Central (2021)*
S James Williams, unranked, Miami Carol City Senior (Miami Gardens, Fla.) (2021)*
T Marcus Tate, unranked, NSU University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) (2021)
