You can definitely expect these two players to have their hands all over the turnover chain next season.
There’s also confidence from evaluators that their success will translate to the next level.
Safety Jaquan Johnson and linebacker Shaquille Quarterman landed on NFL.com’s top 18 list for future defensive stars. Quarterman was ranked at No. 12 while Johnson checked in right after him at No. 13.
The junior Quarterman has been a rock for the Hurricanes defense, starting in all 26 games since arriving as a freshman and tallying 167 tackles.
“He plays the middle linebacker spot and takes well to the leadership the position demands,” NFL.com reporter Chase Goodbread said. “Former Hurricanes star and Carolina Panthers first-round pick Jon Beason, a middle linebacker himself, has been a mentor for Quarterman, and the star pupil has the look of a longtime enforcer for an NFL defense.”
The senior Johnson, who bypassed the 2018 NFL Draft for one more go-around at Miami, was a menace last season, leading the ‘Canes in tackles (96), interceptions (4) and forced fumbles (3).
“He’s active in run support and nimble in coverage, as evidenced by this nifty one-handed pick against Virginia Tech last November,” Goodbread said.
With a pair of defensive stalwarts such as Quarterman and Johnson, Miami is in prime position to defend its ACC Coastal title and push Clemson for the conference crown.
