Former Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens defender Ray Lewis became one of the greatest linebackers in the history of football by the time he retired in 2013. But he was very close to not even playing college football.
Lewis shared his recruitment story on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports 1 during an interview Friday afternoon. Miami rival Florida State actually spoke to Lewis first and offered him a scholarship, but with one condition – he would have to wait his turn behind star linebacker Derrick Brooks. The Seminoles told Lewis he would sit two years behind Brooks and then probably start as a junior.
Therefore, Lewis turned down the scholarship at Florida State. Unable to general any other interest, it appeared as though Lewis wouldn’t attend college, but then Miami called days before National Signing Day.
