North Carolina secured its first commit of the 2020 class on Sunday night. Day’ron Sharpe, a power forward from Winterville (N.C.) South Central, pledged to Roy Williams and the Tar Heels, as first reported by Inside Carolina.
Though not currently ranked by 247Sports, Sharpe is considered a 4-star recruit by Rivals.com. East Carolina, Florida, Georgetown, N.C. State, Old Dominion, Virginia and Wake Forest were among the other offers for the 6-foot-8, 220-pound standout.
Sharpe played a key role for a South Central team that came two wins from a state championship in North Carolina’s Class 4A designation this past season. In 26 games as a sophomore, he averaged 14.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.6 blocks a game. He was also a keen defender, recording 2.2 steals an outing.
As it turns out, North Carolina was a relatively easy decision for Sharpe.
“Ever since I’ve known him, back when he was in the seventh grade, Carolina has been his favorite school,” his high school coach, Chris Cherry, told Inside Carolina’s Sherrell McMillan.
