The North Carolina football team reinstated linebacker Allen Artis on Thursday.
Artis was charged with sexual battery against a female North Carolina student from an incident at a Valentine’s Day party in 2016. But the charges were dismissed by the district attorney’s office last week.
“After conversations with Coach (Larry) Fedora and Allen, we have reinstated Allen to our football program immediately,” UNC Director of Athletics said in a statement Thursday.
Artis rejoins the team for the first time since the program suspended him indefinitely two weeks into last season. The incident involving the female student took place at a Valentine’s Day party in 2016.
Artis was originally a defensive back for the Tar Heels, but he moved to linebacker last August. He played special teams in his two games last year.
The linebacker has one year of eligibility left, but he will apply for an additional year since he lost last season because of the unproven allegations.
