Notre Dame-Minnesota Duluth hockey preview
Close games has been a common theme for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won each of their NCAA Tournament games by a goal, including a 4-3 overtime victory over Michigan Tech in the first round. Notre Dame then beat Providence, 2-1, to advance to the Frozen Four.
Notre Dame continued the trend in the Frozen Four, as senior captain Jake Evans scored with 5.2 seconds left to lift the Fighting Irish past Michigan 4-3.
Evans scored two goals in the victory, with Andrew Oglevie (power play) and Cal Burke netting Notre Dame’s other two.
Evans’ late goal pushed Notre Dame into the national championship game against Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. It will be Notre Dame’s second appearance in the title game. The Fighting Irish have never won a hockey national championship.
But this has been a special Notre Dame squad filled with plenty of magic.
“As you guys have seen basically the whole year, we’re a resilient team and our whole bench was confident that we were going to come back in this one,” Evans said. “It’s unbelievable. I mean, our coach calls us the Cardiac Kids for a reason. This team just has so much confidence. We’re a very humble team but when push comes to shove with five minutes left and we’re tied we’ve got a lot of confidence in winning it.”
Notre Dame defeated Michigan Tech and Providence to reach the Frozen Four.
This is the second consecutive year and fourth time overall that the Fighting Irish made Frozen Four. The Irish lost in the national semifinals to Denver, who eventual won the championship, 6-1, last season.
Minnesota Duluth lost in the national championship game last season to Denver.
Minnesota Duluth advanced to the 2018 national championship game by edging Ohio State 2-1. Minnesota Duluth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Louie Roehl and Jared Thomas.
Minnesota Duluth defeated Minnesota State and Air Force to reach the Frozen Four.
Evans respects his opponent but is confident Notre Dame will bring its A-game when they hit the ice with history on the line.
“I think I’m enjoying the win tonight but tomorrow it’s all business again. We’re definitely going to have it in the back of our minds to bring back the first hockey championship,” Evans said. “Just move on after tonight and be ready to go on Saturday.”
