If you happen to catch a glimpse of the football program at Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C., in 2018, you’re likely to see linebacker Osita Ekwonu flying around the field making plays. The tape from 2017 proves as much and that’s why he is ranked as a 4-star prospect and also why Notre Dame thinks he’s a future star on its defense.
Ekwonu announced his commitment to Notre Dame on Thursday, becoming the 13th overall recruit to join the Class of 2019 and the ninth overall 4-star commit, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
Ranked as the No. 190 overall player in the country by 247Sports, Ekwonu is the No. 7 overall inside linebacker in the class and the No. 4 prospect in North Carolina. He’s the first commitment of this recruiting cycle from North Carolina, but it continues the trend of Notre Dame recruiting well in the Southeast, with six of its 13 commitments from that region.
Ekwonu committed to Notre Dame over offers from Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Ohio State, to name a few of the 23 offers he currently holds. He officially visited Notre Dame in April and has seemed to favor institutions with a solid academic reputation, having also visited Northwestern earlier this month.
Notre Dame’s 2019 class is now ranked No. 6 nationally, according to the composite rankings. This is the Irish’s second linebacker commitment in three days after Jack Kiser from Indiana picked Notre Dame on Tuesday.
