Notre Dame defensive lineman Jay Hayes, who started in all 13 games for the Fighting Irish in 2017, has announced that he will transfer. The New York native posted the news on his Twitter account on Friday evening.

Hayes was a 4-star recruit from Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, N.Y., ranked by 247Sports as the Class of 2014’s No. 21 defensive tackle. He committed to Notre Dame over programs such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
As a freshman in 2014, Hayes played in three games but didn’t see any action in 2015. His playing time increased on the defensive line beginning in 2016, with 10 appearances as a junior before he become a full-time starter in 2017. Last season, he recorded 27 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack.
Since Hayes did not play in 2015, he is considered a graduate transfer and has a year of eligibility remaining. That means that he will be eligible to play immediately in 2018.
