The leprechaun didn’t have the luck of the Irish on one writer’s list.
The Notre Dame mascot somehow checked in as the second worst in college sports according to The Spun’s Andrew McCarty, with the only one rated worse being the Stanford Tree.

Apparently, McCarty’s biggest gripe is with Notre Dame using an actual person as a leprechaun.
“Here we go. Now we’re to what will likely be the most controversial addition to the list. Let’s forget the Fighting Irish logo and focus on the mascot itself,” McCarty said. “There’s just something off about a man dressed up as a leprechaun cheering for his team. The leprechaun would be better served wearing a legitimate costume, rather than decking out a student in fighting Irish garb, at least for consistency’s sake.”
While knowing this is merely subjective, we have to respectfully disagree here. You don’t mess with tradition, especially one as rich as Notre Dame’s.
Also riddle us this: the Notre Dame leprechaun gets the No. 2 spot but the much-maligned USC Trojan is nowhere to be found on this list?
That should tell you all you need to know about the lack of consistency.
Needless to say, McCarty definitely shouldn’t be expecting a pot of gold anytime soon.
