Notre Dame-UCONN keys to the game, preview
- Chance for year’s of revenge: UCONN has won seven straight over Notre Dame, but the Irish gave the Huskies a run for their money in Hartford this year. Geno Auriemma’s squad bested Muffet McGraw’s ladies 80-71, but that was the closest game that Connecticut played within their home state all year. Notre Dame has continued to be ravaged by injuries since then (four ACL tears this season), but they constantly power on and there won’t be an ounce of quit in them against these titans of women’s college basketball.
- Jessica Shepard on an island: She’s the only real post presence for Notre Dame and the Irish will undoubtedly struggle if she’s not dominant inside both as a scorer and a rebounder. UCONN is the most effiecient team in the country offensively and defensively and the aforementioned injuries have titled the talent balance even further in UCONN’s favor. So having a strong performance inside and making sure there aren’t easy second-chance opportunities for the Huskies is step one in allowing Notre Dame to stay in the game. The longer they do, the greater the chance of upset.
- UCONN selflessness: When you’re on a team full of McDonald’s All-Americans (as all of these Final Four teams are), you either tend to clash with your teammates or trust the talent you’re surrounded by wholeheartedly. Auriemma always gets his girls on the same page and that’s why he’s got 11 titles and 19 Final Four appearances to his name. This year’s team is no different, as evidenced by the 25 dimes they dropped in the national semifinal against South Carolina. Notre Dame will need to get into passing lanes and disrupt the flow of that offense to be able to overcome long odds.
Prediction: Notre Dame has been extremely impressive to make it this far given everything they’ve had to overcome, but this UCONN team isn’t going to take them lightly after dropping a national semifinal just a season ago. Expect UCONN to be on their game and to take care of business.
