FRISCO, Texas — Mike Gundy is proud of his mullet hairstyle, which has captured the attention of college football fans. And apparently, the football coach’s hair is responsible for some revenue for Oklahoma State.
When pressed for the dollar figure that his unique coiffure has provided for the university, Gundy wasn’t modest.
“I think that would be a good subject for marketing majors, graduate students to look into,” Gundy said. “But I would [say] the dollar figure is somewhere in the millions for the amount of time I’ve been on the air with that.”
Gundy appeared with NHL analyst Barry Melrose in February, where they compared their mullets and styling tips.
“I was very fortunate to get a contract extension and a raise,” Gundy said. “I should get a raise for that free marketing for the university.”
Since the end of spring practice, Gundy trimmed his hair after it got a tad unruly.
“I had ponytail potential at one time,” Gundy said. “I had to go with that or trim it a little bit.”
His unique hair provides a link with Gundy and his team.
“The players, they like to have fun with that,” Gundy said. “I’m going to turn 50 in a couple of weeks, but I feel great.”
