Mike Boynton dishes on scheduling philosophy; highly touted 2020 CB likes ‘loyalty’ from Cowboys
Welcome to the Wednesday edition of our Oklahoma State DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through the biggest headlines around Oklahoma State athletics.
Mike Boynton dishes on scheduling philosophy
Mike Boynton wants to spice up the Cowboys’ nonconference slate with interesting and familiar matchups, according to Tulsa World’s Mark Cooper.
Boynton wants fans to know, however, it’s not as easy it sounds.
“We tried to play some of these teams [Nebraska, Colorado and Missouri] last year,” Boynton told Cooper. “It doesn’t work that easy. It’s not as easy as it sounds. The dates have to be common, there’s all sorts of things that you take into account.”
Scheduling hurt the Cowboys last season. Oklahoma State’s 2017-18 slate wasn’t strong enough to make the NCAA Tournament field, so Boynton is hoping to make things easier on the committee.
Oklahoma State’s 2018-19 nonconference slate has yet to be finalized, but the Cowboys are expected to face Houston, Nebraska, Minnesota, College of Charleston and South Carolina next season.
Jaylon Jones likes ‘loyalty’ from Cowboys
Cibolo (Texas) Steele cornerback Jaylon Jones is a fan of Stillwater, Okla. — and loyalty.
The Cowboys’ early offer and constant contact with Jones is paying dividends with the 3-star Class of 2020 prospect, who shared his thoughts on coach Mike Gundy’s program.
“Loyalty is what stands out with them – having them be my first offer,” he said. “The communication is pretty strong right now. I call them about every week and just say what’s up to Coach (Tim) Duffie … the relationship with him is pretty good; he’s one of those guys that even if you go someplace else, you feel like you can depend on him and he’s got your back no matter what.”
Jones is also interested in Texas and Texas A&M. Visit Rivals.com for more quotes from the 2020 prospect.
