Baker Mayfield is the clear choice for the Cleveland Browns with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, according to Pro Football Focus’ Steve Palazzolo
The latest PFF mock has Mayfield going first overall, a higher projection than many mock drafts have the former Oklahoma quarterback going at this point. PFF has praised Mayfield as the top quarterback prospect in the draft for a while now, and it doesn’t look like that’s changing.
The nation’s highest-graded quarterback for two straight years, Mayfield’s production has been at another level than his peers and every way the numbers are sliced, he comes out at or near the top. The NFL is more than just college production, but Mayfield has shown well in important areas, including his ability to make “NFL Throws” … as well as his accuracy on tight-window throws, as he had the highest percentage in the class at 52.4 percent. Mayfield’s accuracy and decision-making make him the top signal-caller in the class.
Mayfield visited the Browns on Tuesday, April 3. The other top quarterback prospects in the draft, including Wyoming’s Josh Allen, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and USC’s Sam Darnold are all expected to take pre-draft visits with Cleveland in the next two weeks, according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. The team is reportedly “very close” to picking which quarterback it will take first overall.
Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson said the Heisman winner is “no doubt” in the mix for them at No. 1. However, he and Browns general manager John Dorsey both missed Oklahoma’s pro day.
The 2018 NFL Draft kicks off Thursday, April 26.
