Oklahoma football recruiting: Could 4-star OL Darrell Simpson commit this weekend?
Stay up to date with Oklahoma football recruiting with the latest news, notes and analysis each weekday in Wagon Wheels. In this edition, we look at the players the Sooners are most likely to add to the 2018 recruiting class.
Oklahoma’s Class of 2018 has held firm at 16 since adding Midwest City, Okla,. defensive end Jalen Redmond on July 29. His commitment ended a hot streak for the Sooners. In a two-month span, they hauled in nine verbal pledges for 2018, three for 2019 and one for 2020. All but one of those commitments occurred after Oklahoma promoted coach Lincoln Riley on June 7.
Once the calendar flipped to August, a drought took over. The dry spell could end on Saturday, though, when 4-star offensive tackle Darrell Simpson (Northwest H.S./Justin, Texas) is slated to make his decision.
Ohio State, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas A&M join the Sooners in Simpson’s top 5.
Simpson, who is one of the biggest offensive linemen the Sooners have recruited at 6-foot-7 and 336 pounds, is the No. 13-ranked player at his position and No. 170 overall nationally, according to the 247Sports composite. He could be the fourth 4-star or higher recruit the Sooners line up for this class.

Oklahoma offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh seems to have a message and and a plan that recruits are buying. In the 2017 class, he brought in three 4-star offensive linemen: guard Marquis Hayes, center Creed Humphrey and tackle Adrian Ealy.
The offensive line could step to the forefront in 2018. The Sooners’ No. 1 recruit is 5-star Brey Walker (Westmoore H.S./Moore, Okla.) and also includes junior-college transfer Tramonda Moore (Independence Community College/Independence, Kan.). The expectation is this class will include four offensive linemen, and the Sooners also are pursuing IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) tackle Reuben Unije.
C.J Smith sets official visit
Official visit plans can change in an instant, but the Sooners appear to have one set thus far. 247Sports reports C.J. Smith, a 6-2, 193-pound 4-star safety at Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach, Fla.) has scheduled four official visits. The Sooners are set to host him when they face Iowa State on Oct. 7.
Smith, who de-committed from Florida on July, plans to visit Louisville, South Carolina and Mississippi as well.
