NFL draft analysts appear to be approaching a consensus with their mock drafts: They believe Baker Mayfield is heading to the New York Jets.
With one week left until the draft, the latest mocks from Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, NFL.com, SB Nation, USA Today and Land of 10 all have Mayfield going No. 3 overall to New York as the most likely scenario. The former Oklahoma quarterback has long been connected to the Jets in the lead-up to the draft, and that chatter escalated when New York traded up to the third overall pick.
Mayfield reportedly met with the Jets from April 9-10, and reports indicate the team’s decision-makers are very high on him. And many media members think it’s a good fit because of Mayfield’s playing style and his big personality.
From USA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz:
Passing up Josh Rosen could be a difficult proposition for GM Mike Maccagnan given how well-aligned the draft’s most pro-ready quarterback appears to be with offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates’ philosophy. But Mayfield generates a unique spark for an offense in need of someone who can create on the fly. If his brashness and signature flare translate to the Jets, Broadway Baker will be a phenomenon.
NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah:
Mayfield has the presence and accuracy the Jets are looking for at the QB position.
SB Nation’s Dan Kadar:
The Jets traded up to the third overall pick to make a big splash. There are few bigger splashes, and headline grabbers, than Mayfield. The only people who would love him more than Jets fans are Jets media members.
New York has two veteran quarterbacks on the roster in Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, which theoretically would give Mayfield time to develop before being asked to take over the offense. However, the Jets need to use some of their other draft picks to find weapons for their new quarterback as well.
If Mayfield went No. 3 overall, he would be the highest-drafted player from Oklahoma since Gerald McCoy was taken with the third pick in 2010. The Sooners’ most recent first-round selection was Lane Johnson at No. 4 overall in 2013.
Mayfield will find out if he’s going to New York or another team next week when the draft kicks off on Thursday, April 26.
