One anonymous NFL assistant seems skeptical of Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield is a talented quarterback, but one AFC offensive coordinator thinks he has “some con-man in him,” according to SI’s Albert Breer.
“I think he’s got some con-man in him, but he can throw the football,” said one AFC offensive coordinator. “And where he’s absolutely amazing is with his recall. Absolutely amazing. You’re calling up plays on his tape, he had a photographic memory: This and this and this is about to happen, and I went over here. You’re like, ‘Wow.’ It’s impressive. As good as I’ve ever seen.”
Why a con-man? Well, it’s hard to say exactly what the offensive coordinator means by the label.
It’s mentioned in the original SI story that Mayfield rubbed a few teams the wrong way at the Senior Bowl in January. He’s since climbed mock draft boards all the way to No. 1 to the Cleveland Browns.
It seems the assistant thinks Mayfield’s talked his way back into the good graces of a few franchises. But con-man or not, the offensive coordinator thinks Mayfield is an impressive prospect.
Mayfield’s been remarkable in his workouts and private interviews. His throwing accuracy has drawn comparisons to former Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford. And it’s hard to deny Mayfield’s skillset when looking back at his college tape.
Mayfield will be one of the first players off the board in the 2018 NFL Draft. The first round begins at 8 p.m. ET, Thursday, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
