It’s impossible to tell the story of the 2017-18 college football season without talking about Baker Mayfield.
The Oklahoma quarterback won the Heisman Trophy and put together one of the more incredible seasons in Big 12 history. Even so, his antics and brashness might grabbed more headlines than his play on the field — love him or hate him. From crotch grabs to T-shirts to planting a flag, Mayfield was everywhere in 2017.
ESPN included Mayfield on their list of “weird, wonderful and unforgettable” moments in 2017, collected by David M. Hale — both for his great play and his lively personality.
“You have to admit Baker Mayfield made college football a lot more interesting,” Hale wrote. “Not only did the Oklahoma quarterback win the Heisman Trophy this season and lead the Sooners to the College Football Playoff, but he made plenty of headlines outside his play, including planting an Oklahoma flag on Ohio State’s home turf and offering a few profanities and an obscene gesture to the folks at Kansas who’d refused to shake hands before the game.”
It’s not just Mayfield’s numbers that will live on past this season. The fiery quarterback will be the standard for many players to come, both in terms of outstanding production and headline-grabbing shenanigans.
