Baker Mayfield keeps getting connected with the Broncos in mock drafts, going No. 5 to Denver in the latest projections from SB Nation’s Dan Kadar and Adam Stites.
Mayfield was the fourth quarterback off the board in the SB Nation mock. Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen were the first three picks to the Browns, Giants and Jets, respectively. That left Mayfield as the top remaining quarterback available.
From SB Nation:
Three of the top four quarterbacks are off the board, so if the Broncos want to add talent at the position they better do it now before the avalanche leaves nothing left. Case Keenum might be the solution, but his contract suggests he’s more of a band-aid who’s getting an audition to prove he’s something more. Adding Mayfield gives a more long-term answer who can take over when he’s ready.
The Broncos have expressed interest in Mayfield and have become a popular projected landing spot for him in the upcoming draft. Sports Illustrated actually picked Denver to trade up and grab Mayfield last week.
Despite the statistical evidence discouraging it, it looks like Allen is going to go ahead of Mayfield with one of the top picks in the first round. And with Darnold and Rosen expected to be the first two quarterbacks taken, that might set Mayfield up to slide down a few picks to the Dolphins, Bills or Cardinals.
As things stand right now, going to Denver in the top five may be the highest Mayfield can get drafted. However, there is still time for the draft board to shuffle before the draft kicks off April 26.
