Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is already impressing his receivers in Cleveland, per Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
The Browns’ first-overall pick is currently the team’s second-string quarterback behind veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor.
Cleveland wideout Josh Gordon called Mayfield and Taylor the “most talented quarterbacks” he’s seen since joining the franchise in 2012.
“The most talented quarterbacks I’ve seen come through here — by far,” Gordon said on the first day of Browns mandatory minicamp. “It’s going to be an interesting thing to watch the quarterback battle go on but you’ve got a proven guy in Tyrod, we’ve got a young talented guy in Baker. I don’t see how it can go wrong, really.”
Fellow Browns receiver and the NFL’s 2017 receptions leader, Jarvis Landry, agreed with Gordon’s sentiments.
It’s a huge compliment to Mayfield and Taylor, who seem to be at the forefront of what could be a turnaround year for the struggling franchise.
The Browns have experienced terrible luck with quarterbacks. For perspective, here is a comprehensive list of the quarterbacks the Browns have gone through since Gordon was drafted by the team in 2012:
- Robert Griffin III
- Kevin Hogan
- Brian Hoyer
- Cody Kessler
- DeShone Kizer
- Josh McCown
- Colt McCoy
- Jason Campbell
- Thad Lewis
- Johnny Manziel
- Connor Shaw
- Brandon Weeden
It’s not a pretty picture, but Mayfield and Taylor seem to be the Browns’ best shot at winning in some time.
