Georgia coach Kirby Smart views Baker Mayfield as ‘a level beyond Johnny Manziel’
The Johnny Manziel-Baker Mayfield comparisons just won’t stop. They’ve recently been fired up again by Georgia coach Kirby Smart, who said that Baker Mayfield was “a level beyond Johnny Manziel,” according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken.

For a dual-threat quarterback, even being compared to Manziel is an honor. The former Texas A&M quarterback was one of the most prolific players in college football history, both on and off the field. Mayfield is making a legacy similar to Manziel’s, only with the off-field shenanigans significantly scaled down.
In terms of statistics, Mayfield has passed Manziel. Mayfield has thrown for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions this season, completing 71 percent of his passes. In his best season, Manziel completed 69.9 percent of his passes, and threw for 4,114 yards with 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Manziel was more prolific on the ground than Mayfield, but the passing statistics still remain.
Smart has some history with Manziel, too. He was the Alabama defensive coordinator tasked with defending him in 2012 and 2013. In two games against Smart’s defense, Manziel racked up 907 total yards and 7 passing touchdowns. When it comes to Manziel comparisons, Smart knows what he’s talking about.
