When Jimbo Fisher hired former Oklahoma strength coach Jerry Schmidt in January he did so because he noticed a trend in Schmidt’s previous stops.
According to the Austin American-Statesman’s Suzanne Halliburton, Fisher noted at a Texas A&M booster event in Austin on Sunday that Schmidt had been part of national championship teams at three of his last four jobs: Notre Dame (1988), Florida (1996) and Oklahoma (2000).
“He owes me one,” Fisher joked.
Schmidt had been a member of the Sooners’ staff since 1999, when Bob Stoops hired him in his first year as coach. He has worked with six Heisman Trophy winners: Baker Mayfield (2017), Sam Bradford (2008), Jason White (2003), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Barry Sanders (1988) and Tim Brown (1987).
To replace Schmidt, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley hired former Texas strength coach Bennie Wylie.
