Joe Namath, one of the most outrageous players in NFL history, thinks Baker Mayfield is pretty outrageous himself.
He means it in the best possible sense. The New York Jets legend has gotten acquainted with Mayfield’s play. And with his Jets potentially targeting the Heisman Trophy winner in the NFL Draft, he told ESPN’s Rich Cimini that Mayfield is his favorite quarterback in the draft.
Namath officially converted to Mayfield fandom after watching his performance against Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Oklahoma’s defeat in that game meant Namath’s Alabama Crimson Tide didn’t have to face Mayfield in the national title game, which Namath said was a relief.
Joe Namath has liked Baker Mayfield from the beginning
But Namath’s affinity for Mayfield stretches back before this past season. Namath has liked the Oklahoma star since the first time he watched him, and thinks he has the right stuff to overcome his limitations in the NFL.
“Hey, it wasn’t just Georgia, it was a couple of years, early on, when I saw him play. I saw him a couple of years back. I never saw him look bad. I don’t know how tall he is. I still don’t know big he is. Size can be a major asset, yes, size can be an asset in today’s game. But Drew Brees, his size was questioned many times and he’s one of the greatest players who’s ever played.”
Recent opinion has coalesced around Mayfield going No. 3 overall to Namath’s Jets. And if that happens, Broadway Joe is going to be a happy man.
