“With the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Baker Mayfield, quarterback, Oklahoma.”
Just like that, Mayfield’s well-documented journey from a former walk-on to a Heisman Trophy winner, and ultimately the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, is now complete.
Lincoln Riley, who served as Mayfield’s offensive coordinator prior to taking over as head coach following Bob Stoops’ sudden retirement last summer, played a significant role in Mayfield’s emergence to the top of college football’s best players, and ultimately, the top of the NFL draft.
Not surprisingly, Riley didn’t mince words when calling to congratulate Mayfield on being selected No. 1 overall.

Last season, Mayfield led the Oklahoma Sooners to a 12-2 record, a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance in Riley’s debut season.
