So much for Baker Mayfield to the Browns being a “smokescreen,” huh? One day after writing that he wasn’t buying rumors of the Oklahoma quarterback going first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. put Mayfield at the top of his final mock draft.
Mayfield’s inclusion at the top of the list means that Kiper is in on Mayfield going No. 1. After all, Kiper’s mock draft, according to him, is based solely off of “where (he) think guys can come off the board based on what (he’s) hearing.”
“You heard it from ESPN’s Adam Schefter this morning. Baker to Cleveland is all the talk. Josh Allen isn’t helped by the offensive tweets that surfaced overnight. Mayfield could be ready to compete with Tyrod Taylor immediately.”
It’s quite the turnaround for Kiper, who said on Wednesday that Wyoming’s Josh Allen and USC’s Sam Darnold were the likely finalists. Buzz surrounding Mayfield as the No. 1 pick has built heavily in recent days, with many reports surfacing that the Browns have settled on the Heisman Trophy winner.
It’s been a week filled with rumors and speculation. The truth will be revealed Thursday night at 8 p.m., when the Browns officially go on the clock.
