Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione has a strong reputation as one of the best athletic directors in the business.
So it’s not a surprise that schools looking to hire an athletic director would consider Castiglione as a model.
According to the Lawrence Journal-World’s Matt Tait, a number of candidates for the vacant Kansas job have direct Oklahoma ties.
Former Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long and current Oklahoma senior associate athletic director Kenny Mossman are among those who have been prominently mentioned for the job. Long worked as the senior associate athletic director at Oklahoma before athletic director jobs at Pitt and Arkansas.
Other candidates who are being strongly considered include Central Michigan athletic director Michael Alford, SMU athletic director Rick Hart, Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork and Colorado State athletic director Joe Parker. All but Bjork worked for Castiglione at Oklahoma, while Bjork worked with Castiglione at Missouri.
Kansas is searching for a replacement for previous athletic director Sheahon Zenger, who was fired May 21 after seven years at Kansas.
No timeline in place for Kansas athletic director search
There has been no formal winnowing of the candidates to a group of finalists. The Kansas search began in late May under the direction of search committee leader Drue Jennings.
