The 2017 Oklahoma Sooners started off their season with a bang by defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road. They stumbled in the middle of the season in a loss to Iowa State, but rattled off eight wins in a row after the loss to clinch the Big 12 Championship.
The Sooners were selected for the College Football Playoff, but fell in the semifinal round to the Georgia Bulldogs in an all-time classic overtime game, 54-48.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy, given to the most outstanding player in college football. Mayfield, tight end Mark Andrews, and offensive tackle Orlando Brown could be selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield set the FBS record for passing efficiency during the season, beating his own record from 2016.
The 2018 Oklahoma squad will have to find a way to replace Mayfield and a number of other stellar seniors who will move on to the NFL and elsewhere. Saturday’s spring game will be the world’s first look at the new iteration of Sooner football.
